Reducing your speed to 55 mph from 65 mph may increase your fuel efficiency by as much as 15 percent; cut it to 55 from 70, and you could get a 23 percent improvement
What Can You Do?
To travel with a lighter footstep:
- Stay closer to home. The less you drive, the easier your trip is on the environment. Instead, take an alternative form of transportation, like a train or a bus.
- Increase your fuel efficiency on the road. Inflate your tires, and drive at a leisurely pace.If your trip requires flying, or driving a long distance, rent a hybrid. Hertz recently started renting Toyota Prius at major metropolitan airports, and for inner city driving, check out car shares. Zipcar, available in bigger cities like New York, Chicago and Washington D.C., provides hybrids on a per-hour basis.
- Get to know the country through the window of a train. If you’re really intent on taking a big vacation, consider splurging on an Amtrak North America Rail Pass ($999 peak/$709 off-peak; www.amtrak.com). The pass allows you to travel to over 900 cities in both the U.S. and Canada for 30 consecutive days.

Pale Blue—The dark horse of fall 2010′s color trends,
pale blue really caught our attention not only because it seemed unexpected for the cold season, but because it had an icy-cool modernity that seems incredibly chic right now. Read more >>
Stay ahead of the trend with Guru’s Cape Cod Tunic Dress

Guru is proud to be in a select group of vendors that make up the Brooklyn Flea. Guru started participating at the Flea in its first year (2008). We have seen it grow from one Saturday in a high school yard in Forte Greene to a full fledged “top place to shop” in Brooklyn, then in New York, now the World.
From the Flea’s Insider Updates: here is a list of current press for the Brooklyn Flea:
Delta’s Sky in-flight magazine names the Flea one of the world’s 5 best markets! August 2010 issue, with Mark Wahlberg on the cover. (Not online yet.) In the same league with: London’s Portobello Market, Brimfield, and the Rose Bowl. Wow.
Daily News put the Flea in its 50 Things that Make New Yorkers Smile
feature. Cute.
Traditional Home included a few Flea mentions in its cool Brooklyn travel story this month.
Check it out.
Congrats to Caroline and Tony from Brooklyn Soda Works for being named
#1 locally made soda in this week’s
New York magazine!
Fashion Canada loves the Flea on its blog, and is running a print feature soon.
National Geographic Traveler has a Brooklyn holiday shopping story coming out in November featuring info on the Flea and Gifted.
We also have a feature coming up on
Shelterpop.com, AOL’s national and huge home/design website, where the Flea is named one of America’s top markets.
If you spot pictures of the Guru booth or would like to share your experience with us about shopping at the flea or with us, please forward to at shop@guru-nyc.com and earn 10% off your next order with us – in person or online. We look forward to hearing from you.
Going to the beach? Sun bathing on a roof-top deck? Visiting Guru at one of our outdoor weekend venues? Check out this informative website on how to protect yourself in the summer’s blazing sun:
SunSafetyRules.com offers free sun smart articles and gathers safe sun tips and advice for you to enjoy summer safely.
Here are the top fifteen from their list of 101 excellent tips.

- Make daily sun protection a habit.
- Avoid the strongest sun rays of the day: rest in the shade from 11am to 4pm.
- Apply sunscreen about 20 minutes before going outside to allow time for the active ingredients in the sunscreen to reach the protection level so that a good layer of protection can form.
- Apply generously – as a guide for an adult use about one teaspoon for each arm and leg and half a teaspoon for the face, ears and neck.
- Reapply SPF every 2 hours or at the first sensation of tingling or burning, to compensate for loss due to towel drying, perspiration or swimming. Blowing your nose wipes spf off, too! So just reapply!
- When applying suntan lotion, avoid direct contact with the borders of your swimsuit: the oils can cause swimsuits elastics to break down.
- SPF makeup loses its ability to completely shield the skin in about 4 hours. So, just like for SPF sunscreen the rules is: reapply!
- Don’t forget to apply SPF to areas such as the ears, under your nose, behind the knees, behind the back, and the tops of the feet.
- Apply a lip balm with at least SPF 15 on your lips. Girls can use a color gloss rather than clear, which will protect your lips even more.
- Learn the Shadow Rule – if your shadow is shorter than you are, the sun is at its highest intensity. The American Academy of Dermatology has established the Shadow Rule: No Shadow-Seek Shade.
- Sweating make you lose a lot of body fluids. So drink plenty of water (at least eight glasses a day) to avoid heat-related illnesses.
- Be aware of the damages caused by the “invisible sun” on cloudy or outcast days: you might be unaware that you’re developing a sunburn on cooler because the temperature or breeze keeps skin feeling cool on the surface.
- Wearing protective sunglasses will prevent you from having cataract when you grow old.
- Don’t try to stretch out a bottle of sunscreen; as a guide, apply the sunscreen generously.
- Waterproof sunscreens may last up to 80 minutes in the water, and some are also sweat- and rub-proof. But, regardless of the waterproof label, be sure to reapply sunscreen when you come out of the water.
